Burgundy and its wine list
Discover the Burgundy wine list with its various regional and village appellations, its Premiers Crus, and its Grands Crus.
Regional appellations
Regional appellations constitute the first level of the Burgundy wine hierarchy. They cover a vast geographical area and offer an accessible introduction to the region’s wines.
Bourgogne AOC
This generic appellation allows the production of red, white, and rosé wines throughout the Burgundy vineyards. The red wines, made primarily from Pinot Noir, are renowned for their suppleness and fruity aromas. White wines made from Chardonnay are distinguished by their freshness and floral notes.
Bourgogne Aligoté
Specific to white wines produced from the Aligoté grape variety, this appellation produces lively and light wines, often enjoyed as an aperitif or with seafood.
Crémant de Bourgogne
This appellation is dedicated to sparkling wines made using the traditional method. Crémants de Bourgogne are renowned for their finesse and elegance, offering an interesting alternative to champagnes.
Village Appellations
Village, or communal, appellations represent the second level of the hierarchy. They come from more restricted geographical areas and better reflect local characteristics.
Chablis
Located in northern Burgundy, the Chablis appellation is reserved exclusively for white wines made from Chardonnay. These wines are renowned for their minerality, freshness, and citrus aromas.
Gevrey-Chambertin
This Côte de Nuits appellation is famous for its powerful and structured red wines made from Pinot Noir. Gevrey-Chambertin wines offer aromas of black fruits, licorice, and spicy notes.
Meursault
Located in the Côte de Beaune region, Meursault is renowned for its rich and complex white wines with aromas of dried fruits, butter, and honey.
Premier Crus
Within the village appellations, some vineyards are awarded the "Premier Cru" designation, indicating superior quality. These vineyards, such as "Les Amoureuses" in Chambolle-Musigny or "Les Perrières" in Meursault, produce wines of great finesse and notable aging potential.
Grands Crus
At the top of the hierarchy are the Grands Crus, representing the excellence of Burgundy wines. These prestigious appellations, such as La Romanée-Conti, Le Montrachet or Le Chambertin, come from specific plots with exceptional characteristics. Wines from these terroirs are rare, sought-after, and often command high prices.
